Obvious use of schema in the depiction of an armadillo. These are an indication of how the children experienced the subject matter as well as what they had observed.

Interesting to note the different schema used; some are just showing the head, but still communicate the sense of a crowd or group of people. One image shows a 'Plan view Reversal' schema. While the other has introduced some text which has the effect of 'animating' the drawing. Note also how the schema work for depicting animals.

The drawings show further developments of figure schema. The central drawing of the diver shows how children can communicate a complex image through drawing when they do not have the maturity and vocabulary to translate their observations into language. The black wax crayon on newsprint is very well suited to depicting the subject too! 'Base' and 'skyline' schema are employed in the left hand drawing.

The chidren's descriptions of what they have drawn explain the images further: "There's a lot of things in my picture - two tellys and the sun and clouds and a rainbow and that's our house and that's me and my friends" "I drawed all the children in the nursery" "A caterpillar walking after daddy and mummy"

The sun in the drawing is an elaborated schema. The decorative elaboration is also evident in the figures, although the hands and faces are very simplified. The birds have obviously been seen by the child who has evolved a simple way of drawing them.

Drawings show a mix of viewpoints: perspective, plan view, profile. Different schema are also used to represent figures, birds, vehicles, roads, etc. The drawings typify the confusion which arises when a child responds imaginatively yet wants to use increased knowledge of how things look to get them correct.

The detail in the beach scene is a result of the love of story telling. Everything that is happening is drawn with loving care and attention. The same can be said of the local street scene which includes what looks like the school and its grounds. Both drawings show strong use of schema

The cowboy by a 7 year old is a sophisticated drawing for this age. The range of light and dark tones and the filling in of shapes shows considerable mastery of the medium. Other drawings demonstrate the 'X-ray' view point.
